MPGC Cemetery By-laws
Prospect Cemetery
Known as the “Cemetery on St. Clair,” Prospect has been serving its community since 1890, and is home to exquisite works of art by Canadian artists, and special memorial features including Lights of the Madonna. The cemetery weaves natural features into the landscaping making it one of the city’s most pristine green spaces.
Ground Burial Options
Given the cemetery’s rich heritage, there is limited burial space available, including cremation burial plots and single grave lots, which can accommodate a maximum of two (2) caskets and four (4) cremated remains may be buried in each grave unless otherwise specified on the document for the purchase of the interment rights.
Cremation Options
Many who choose cremation also want a lasting memorial, and a place for family and friends to visit. Prospect offers a range of possibilities:
The Hall of Niches features glass-fronted and marble-fronted niches with bronze plaques. Both Prospect Court Mausoleum and the older Garden Mausoleum have granite-fronted niches available in their columbariums. Cremation burial plots are also available for ground burial.
Crypt Entombment Options
In 2007, we designed the state-of-the-art four-storey Mausoleum of the Sacred Souls around the original cemetery office, adding nearly 1,000 new single, companion and tandem crypts. We have also recently added a third storey overtop the existing outdoor court mausoleum creating what is called the Mausoleum of the Last Supper, with close to 1,200 additional crypts in an indoor, climate-controlled environment.
Lights of the Madonna Memorial
This granite feature located at the entrance to Prospect Court Mausoleum features a beautiful illuminated statue of the Madonna and Child. Inscriptions may be engraved on the plaques below, and photo-ceramic portraits may also be added.
Veterans’ Section
The veterans’ section is dedicated to Canadian and Allied veterans and their spouses. It features the “Cross of Sacrifice,” a cruciform by distinguished British architect Sir Reginald Blomfield, which was officially sanctioned by the Imperial War Graves Commission. A similar memorial can be found in cemeteries of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission around the world.
