Cyril John Stevins

Section 15, Lot 131
Prospect Cemetery

Between the first of October and the thirty-first of December, 1918, more than 1/3 of the burials in Prospect Cemetery were victims of the flu epidemic. Influenza, the Spanish Flu, and a deadly combination of influenza and pneumonia claimed the lives of children and adults alike. Not since the outbreak of typhoid in York Township in 1885 had there been such widespread fear of contagion. The Nash Funeral Home of St. Clair regularly conveyed casketed bodies to Prospect. Some older residents recalled seeing coffins, stacked, lining the roadways of the cemetery. The monument of Cyril John Stevins could only have been provided by a family of some means.
