Gus Morrison was a wireless operator aboard a Halifax bomber in Moose Squadron 419 of the RCAF’s 6th Bomber Group. With more than 20 missions under his belt, Gus’s plane was returning to England after bombing Dusseldorf, when it was shot down over Holland on May 5, 1943. He managed to avoid capture for three days, but was eventually picked up and sent to a prisoner-of war camp. He survived a forced march of Allied prisoners away from advancing Russian troops. His normal weight was 68 kg or 150 lbs, but he was down to a mere 43 kg or 95 lbs after he was liberated by British troops and returned to Canada. He worked briefly for Ontario Hydro as an engineer, before rejoining the RCAF. Five years later he went to Canada Arctic to work on the DEW (Distant Early Warning) Line, operating early warning radar. Angus Morrison died on August 2, 1987 at the age of 65.
