Samuel E. Jewitt, formerly a teacher at Olde Davenport School, became the first principal of Carlton Public School, which opened in 1889. Today, it is known as the Carleton Village Junior and Senior Sports and Wellness Academy. Jewitt died in 1908 at the age of 63.
