Matthew J. Boylen

Section 26, Lot 3
Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Toronto

Born in Toronto, Matthew James Boylen moved with his mother and father to an Alberta homestead. Not content with this way of life when he reached the age of twelve, young Matthew returned to Toronto and, as a teenager, became a prospector in northern Ontario. His most notable venture was the $100 Million Brunswick Mining and Smelting Corporation which in 1969, the year before Boylen’s death, produced over $43 million in lead and zinc. He also established Advocate Mines, an asbestos operation at Baie Verte, Newfoundland. This enterprising gentleman, who never completed grade school, was awarded three honorary degrees including a Doctorate of Civil law from the University of New Brunswick. He was an ardent outdoors-man and enthusiastic breeder of fine thoroughbreds. Matthew James Boylen died at his Kingsway Crescent home on July 7, 1970.
