George Montegu Black

Plot H, Lot 502
Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Toronto

Graduating from the University of Manitoba in 1933 at the age of 22, Black became a chartered accountant in 1937 and two years later was appointed comptroller of Western Breweries Limited. With the outbreak of war, he joined the RCAF and was transferred to a civilian post in the Department of National Defence for Air where he was one of a group that helped initiate the highly successful British Commonwealth Air Training Plan, referred to by U. S. President Roosevelt as the “aerodrome of democracy.”
Following the end of the war, Black joined Canadian Breweries becoming president of the company in 1950, a position he held until his retirement eight years later. George Montegu Black, father of Conrad and G. Montegu III, died on June 29, 1976 just ten days after the death of his wife who is also buried in this plot.
