William Hambly

Born in Toronto in 1845, Hambly joined The Globe newspaper where he was a “printer’s devil” under the watchful eye of George Brown. Later, he worked for The Evening Telegram and The Mail newspapers. He was president of the Canadian Savings and Loan Building Association that developed areas in Toronto’s Beach district, including Hambly Avenue where he lived at No. 62. Hambly was also a public school trustee and served as a city alderman in 1910. He died on November 26, 1939 as a result of injuries received in an accident earlier in the year.
