Thomas Rennie

Plot 19, Lot 68
Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Toronto

Born in Markham, Ontario on December 14, 1868, Rennie was educated at various Toronto public schools. When his father, William Rennie, retired in 1889 from the large seed business he had established, his three sons stepped in, with Thomas eventually assuming the presidency. In addition to his business interests, Rennie was one of the province’s best and most ardent curlers and skipped numerous championship teams. In 1930, Rennie was appointed a Toronto Harbour Commissioner, becoming chairman of the board in 1936. He resigned after a total of 17 years. In tribute to this popular businessman and devoted servant of the waterfront, the Toronto Transportation Commission named their newly constructed ferry boat Thomas Rennie in 1951 A little more than a year later, on August 4, 1952, Thomas Rennie died at the age of 83.
