Born in the small hamlet of Lobo, Ontario in 1890, Graham was the son of Dr. Peter Graham, a typical country doctor. After completing his studies in the local school system, the young Graham moved to Toronto where he attended the University of Toronto and graduated with a degree in medicine at the age of 20. During the First World War, Graham served with the Royal Canadian Medical Corps returning at the cessation of hostilities to join the staff of Toronto General Hospital. Graham became a leading authority in the field of abdominal surgery and in 1939 was called on by American specialists to perform and extremely delicate surgical procedure on Edsel Ford, head of the Ford Motor Company empire. The operation was a complete success. Graham became one of Toronto General Hospital’s senior attending surgeons and was assistant professor of surgery at the University of Toronto. On January 17, 1948, while skiing with friends on the slopes near Collingwood, Ontario, the 58-year-old doctor was stricken with a massive heart attack. Graham died almost instantly.
