Robert Jaffray

Plot L, Lot 6
Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Toronto

Born near Bannockburn, Scotland on January 23, 1882, Jaffray was educated at the famous Stirling Academy and worked for a time in Edinburgh before emigrating to Canada, where he entered the retail and wholesale grocery business in Toronto. Jaffray developed an interest in railways and was appointed director of many such enterprises. He was also affiliated with such diverse companies as Globe Publishing (in 1936 it merged with The Mail and Empire to become the Globe and Mail), Canadian General Electric, Canada Life, and the Toronto General Trust Corporation. Jaffray was called to the Senate of Canada by Governor General Earl Grey on March 8, 1906. Several weeks prior to his death, he was elected president of the Imperial Bank of Canada. Robert Jaffray died at his residence “Surrey Lodge,” 78 Grenville Street, on December 16, 1914.
