Born in Ireland in 1838, Patrick Close came to Canada as a young man and entered the real estate business. For a period of time in the 1890s he managed the Bedford Park Land Company that sold lots in North Toronto. Politically, during the period 1873 - 1878, he represented the ward of St. Lawrence on City Council. In 1877, he was acting chief magistrate during the temporary absence of Mayor Angus Morrison. Close Avenue in the King-Dufferin part of the city is named for this gentleman who died at his residence, 253 Simcoe Street on July 25, 1900 of blood poisoning brought on by an insect bite.
