Mark Wilson was born in Manchester, England in 1836 and at the age of four moved to Detroit, Michigan with his father, who had been expelled for high treason. Wilson eventually left home and with the outbreak of the American Civil War, enlisted with the 7th Wisconsin Regiment. He was a survivor of the bloody Battle of Gettysburg. He and two others were the sole survivors of the Mound City, a Union army sailing ship that blew up in the White River in 1864. Wilson spent his later years working the boats on the Great Lakes. He died at his 39 Fermanagh Avenue residence on January 26, 1921 at the age of 84. At his funeral, the coffin was draped with the Stars and Stripes.
