Lionel Cutten

Plot O, Lot 18
Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Toronto

One of the most unique monuments in the cemetery is this work by German-born sculptor Emanuel Hahn, who is also responsible for such Toronto landmarks as the Ned Hanlan statue in Exhibition Place and Sir Adam Beck’s likeness in the median of University Avenue just south of Queen Street. Hahn, who also designed numerous commemorative coins and medals, died in 1957.
Lionel Cutten, to whom Hahn’s work is dedicated, was born in Guelph, Ontario in 1871 and while still a young man came to Toronto where he and Anthony Foster established Cutten and Foster, importers of automobile parts, radios, and drapery manufacturers. Cutten’s brother was Arthur Cutten, a well-known grain merchant known through the States as “the wheat king.”
Lionel Cutten died of a heart attack at his residence, 118 Forest Hill Road on August 21, 1938.
