John Hoskin

Plot N, Lot 1
Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Toronto

Hoskin was born in Holsworthy, Devonshire, England in 1836 and received his early education in London, England. He immigrated to Toronto in 1854 and attended the University of Toronto. After graduating from law school, Hoskin was called to the Ontario Bar in 1863. He established the prestigious law firm now known as Osler, Hoskin and Harcourt. Hoskin served for may years as chairman of the Board of Trustees, and later the Board of Governors, of the University of Toronto. During his tenure the street known as Hoskin Avenue was laid through the university grounds and named in his honour, as was Devonshire Place recognising Hoskin’s birthplace. He died at his residence, 214 St. George Street, on October 6, 1921 and was buried here dressed in his court attire two days later.
