John Fisher

Plot F, Section 6, Lot 28
Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Toronto

Perth, Scotland was the birthplace of John Fisher, who emigrated to Toronto in 1856 at the age of 20. Pursuing an interest in carpentry, Fisher moved to the village of North Toronto where he obtained employment with Nicholas Maughan.  He then went into partnership with James Ramsey and together they built numerous buildings in the village which was elevated to town status in 1890. In addition to being a contractor, Fisher ran for and won the mayoralty race in North Toronto, becoming that community’s first mayor, a position he held for thirteen years. The public school on Erskine Avenue is name for this respected citizen who died at the Toronto General Hospital, then located on the north side of Gerrard Street just west of the Don River, on May 27, 1911.
