George Knudson

Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1937, Knudson was often referred to, later in his life, as Canada’s finest professional golfer. He was just 14 when he began caddying at a local golf course. Craving more competition, Knudson moved to Toronto in 1958 and joined the Oakdale club. Within a few years he had become a regular on the U.S. Tour.
Knudson won the Caribbean tour five times, the major league circuit eight times, and the Canadian PGA championship a total of five times. In 1968, with fellow Canadian Al Balding, he gave Canada its first World Cup. In Knudson’s later years he taught golf at the National and Buttonville clubs.
An extremely heavy smoker, Knudson was diagnosed with lung cancer shortly before his fiftieth birthday. He died on January 24, 1989 at the age of only 51.
