George J. Spring

Plot F, Section 8, Lot 8
Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Toronto

This unusual monument is actually the boulder on which Spring sat while fishing outside his summer home in Muskoka. Spring was born and educated in Toronto and was the nephew of William Smith (Plot W, Lot 30), founder of Dominion Wood and Coal Company. Upon the latter's death in 1947, Spring took over management of the company. Under his direction the company expanded into the building supply business in the mid-1950s. George Spring, who lived on The Bridal path, died in Wellesley Hospital on March 5, 1968 following a long illness.
