George Weston

Plot 19, Lot 27
Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Toronto

Born in Oswego, New York on March 23, 1864, Weston came to Canada with his parents as a small boy and settled in Toronto. At the age of 18, he was apprenticed to a local baker and, in 1882, the industrious young man bought the business. With one horse and wagon, Weston became baker, deliveryman, and bookkeeper.
In 1911, his business and two other local bakeries were bought out and a new company called Canada Bread established. As part of the deal, Weston was prevented from making and selling bread for 10 years, so be moved into the biscuit business. After a period of time in England, where he learned how to make biscuits the British way, Weston returned to Toronto and established a new bakery on Bathurst Street and quickly introduced Torontonians to biscuits and cakes, English-style. Weston also served as an alderman for Ward Four during the period 1910 – 1913. George Weston died April 6, 1924.
