On May 7, 1944 the Canadian warship HMCS Valleyfield was torpedoed by German submarine U-548 in the north Atlantic, southeast of Cape Race, Newfoundland, and sank within six minutes. 125 of her crew were killed in the tragedy.
Valleyfield was the first Canadian frigate and the tenth Canadian ship lost to enemy action since the start of the Second World War. One of the crew was Lieutenant Maclachlan whose body was never found. The young man is remembered on the Maclachlan family monument in Mount Pleasant Cemetery with the words “Lost at Sea on the HMCS Valleyfield.”
George Alan Maclachlan was one of 1,990 members of the Royal Canadian Navy who made the supreme sacrifice in the Second World War.
