William James McBain

William James McBain was born and raised in St. Thomas. He studied architecture at the University of Toronto, graduating in 1944. For the next two years, he worked for the firm of Mathers and Haldenby before accepting a teaching post at the University of Toronto. During his teaching career he worked on the design of a number of buildings in and around Metropolitan Toronto. He worked with Hart Massey on the design of the law building at the U. of T. He was co-designer of the Girl Guides of Canada headquarters on Merton Street in Toronto. The original library in Cooksville was also the work of Professor McBain. In 1970, he went to Thailand for a year on a Canadian International Development Agency project and aided the school design and construction division of the Thailand education department. Professor McBain died on October 23, 1985 at the age of 72, seven years after retiring.
