Annie “Nance” Horwood

One of the best known community figures interred in the cemetery is Annie “Nance” Horwood, a Newfoundland native who was Brampton’s first woman mayor (from 1954 to 1958), and town reeve from 1960 until the start of the regional government in 1974, including a one-year term as warden of Peel County Council in 1969. Prior to entering politics, Nance Horwood gained a reputation for her work as a local probation officer in family and juvenile courts. Mrs. Horwood was a lifelong member of the Salvation Army who was also known for her community work. She was a founder of the Brampton Caledon Community Living, a long-time member of the local library board, an appointee to the board of Peel Memorial Hospital, a member of the Peel YM-YWCA and an honorary member of the local Big Brothers. In 1967, she was awarded the Canada Medal for community service. Nance Horwood died on November 22, 1986 at the age of 90.
