Edward Cudworth

Section 8, Lot 1422
Beechwood Cemetery, Vaughan

Edward Cudworth was a local marathon runner who “came from nowhere” to beat out the reigning Canadian champion Percy Wyer, for a seat on the 1932 Olympic team. He ran the race in 2 hours 52 minutes and 12 seconds. The Olympics where held in Los Angeles that year and on the day of the marathon, temperatures reached 40°C (104°F). By the end of the race, over half of the competitors, including a heartbroken Cudworth, had been forced to drop out. Although he went on to place 9th in the 1932 Boston Marathon, Cudworth never really recovered from his performance in Los Angeles and soon quit running. He died of cancer on February 19, 1990, at the age of 79.
