Anne Barrington was a doctor who entered the field of medicine when it was still very much a male dominated profession. Born in India in 1900, she entered the Lady Harding Medical College in Delhi at age 18. By the age of 26, she was a fully qualified doctor. She furthered her medical studies in London, (where she met and married George Barrington in 1937), attaining a Bachelor of Science degree and became a member of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons. She was also qualified in mod-wifery and surgery, and her English studies enabled her to practice in the Midlands. During World War II, she worked as an army doctor in the Middle East, where her husband was stationed. Following the war, Dr. Barrington returned to India, where she worked for the Red Cross from 1945 to 1948. She came to Canada in 1966 to join her children and worked as a therapist at Toronto's Addiction Research Foundation until her retirement at age 75. Anne Barrington was 87 years old when she died on May 9, 1988.
