York Cemetery
Colourful flowerbeds, distinctive architecture and a collection of beautiful sculptures – opened in 1948, these are the defining features of York Cemetery. It’s also home to historic Michael Shepard House, built in the early 1850s, which has been officially recognised by the North York Historical Board.
In order to meet the diverse cultural needs of the surrounding communities, York’s staff members speak a number of different languages.
Ground Burial Options
There are a variety of options available to you when you choose ground burial, including:
- A single grave that can accommodate a flat marker and maximum of two (2) caskets and four (4) cremated remains may be buried in each grave unless otherwise specified on the document for the purchase of the interment rights
- A single grave that permits upright monuments and a maximum of two (2) caskets and four (4) cremated remains may be buried in each grave unless otherwise specified on the document for the purchase of the interment rights
- Larger lots of two or more graves on which an upright monument can be placed
Cremation Options
Many who choose cremation will also want a lasting memorial, and a place for family and friends to visit. York Cemetery offers beautifully landscaped outdoor columbariums and cremation burial plots including:
Solar and Geothermal Powered Columbarium
Opened in 2011, we are pleased to feature Canada’s first solar and geothermal system powered niche columbarium in the Garden of Remembrance. The building leverages underground temperatures that remain constant year-round with the use of a buried “earth loop.”
Throughout the winter, fluid circulating through the loop absorbs stored heat and carries it indoors, where an indoor heat pump compresses it to a higher temperature and distributes it throughout the building. The process is reversed in the summer. The columbarium also uses solar energy, gathered by roof-mounted solar panels, to generate electric power to operate the heat pump unit’s fan, compressor and pump, as well as the building’s lighting and other electrical features. The columbarium features granite-fronted niches on the outside of the building, and glass-fronted ones indoors.
Garden of Remembrance
A meandering memorial stream resembling a Scottish burn winds its way through the section amongst the mature plant material. The stream is lined with granite memorial boulders.
Strategically located within the surrounding lawns are more urn spaces that will accommodate either a flat granite marker, or an upright monument. Wooden bridges crossing the stream are lined with bronze memorial railings. On either side, at each end of the bridges are small Britts blue granite columbarium niches. Memorials may be inscribed on the niche fronts.Veterans’ Section
The veterans’ section is dedicated to Canadian and Allied veterans and their spouses. in recognition of veterans’ service to their country, the costs of interment rights in this section are reduced.
