Gus Harris

Born July 1908 in Liverpool, England, Augustus Vincent Patrick John “Gus” Harris came to Canada in 1929. A conscientious objector, Harris spent the duration of World War II in a camp in Alberta. Gus Harris was the mayor of Scarborough from 1978 to 1988. First elected to the Scarborough Township council following World War II, Gus was elected reeve in 1956. He served on the Board of Control when Scarborough became first, a borough, and then a city in 1983. Harris never accepted financial donations to his political campaigns from any source. Gus Harris died on February 20, 2000, at the age of 91.
